The ghat was raised in the days of the Maratha empire in the name of Peshwa Amrut Rao. The palace above belongs to that age, when Maratha chiefs built their mansions in Kashi. The tradition of grand residences survives in the lanes behind. From the top the spire of the Kedareshwar temple appears above the roofs. Mornings bring the bathers; the middle of the day is calm. Seen from a boat, the terraces and verandas of the palace are at their finest.
