The royal houses of Karnataka and the Gauda Saraswat Brahmin community made this ghat a mark of their patronage. Pilgrims from the south have long made it their first bathing place in Kashi. The stairs are wide and the crowds stay lighter than on the great ghats. In the first morning light the ghat is one of the pleasantest forms of the city.
