Built at the mouth of the Asi stream, this is the largest and busiest ghat of Varanasi. Legend says the goddess dropped her sword (asi) here after slaying the demons, and the Asi river was born. The name also carries the number assi (eighty), by which the ghat is equally known. Close by lies Lolark Kund, where devotees offer water to the sun. In modern times the ghat grew into the cultural stage of the city — the venue of the Ganga Mahotsav and the first stop of every visitor. The grounds of the Banaras Hindu University rise above it, so the ghat hums with the city’s students.
