History & Significance of Ganga Mahal Ghat (I)
English
The palace is popularly dated to the eighteenth century, when Maratha influence ran strong across Kashi. Its tall bastions and lookout towers give it the air of a fortress — exactly how it reads from the water. It preserves the memory of an era when the palaces of Varanasi were built straight onto the river. The palace is now mostly private residence, but the steps remain fully public. At sunrise, when the light climbs the bastions, it is one of the grandest frames in all of Kashi.
