History & Significance of Chet Singh Ghat

In the late eighteenth century Raja Chet Singh of Banaras built this fort-palace on the water. In 1781 his quarrel with Governor-General Warren Hastings exploded into battle; when the troops closed in, Hastings slipped through the fort’s secret drain to the river and was rowed away from this very bank. The double ramparts and high bastions still speak of that war. The ghat is also called the Fort Ghat. The palace above is now a private residence among old mansions, but the steps are public and the sunset from them is superb.

अठारहवीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध में बनारस के राजा चेत सिंह ने यह किला-महल बनवाया। 1781 में गवर्नर-जनरल वारेन हेस्टिंग्स से संघर्ष हुआ; सैनिकों के घेरने पर हेस्टिंग्स किले के गुप्त नाले से भागकर नदी में उतरे और उनकी नौका यहीं से रवाना हुई। किले की दोहरी दीवारें और नदी-तट की ऊंची प्राचीरें आज भी उस लड़ाई की तैयारी बताती हैं। घाट को ‘फोर्ट घाट’ भी कहा जाता है। ऊपर का महल अब पुरानी हवेलियों के बीच एक निजी निवास है, पर सीढ़ियां सार्वजनिक हैं और सूर्यास्त का दृश्य यहां अद्भुत है।

The ghat steps are open 24 hours. The fort-palace is a private residence and is not open to visitors. The sunset hours ~4:30-6:30 PM give the best view.
