A ghat built in 1770 by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, crowned by the famous observatory instruments of Sawai Jai Singh.

History & Significance of Man Mandir Ghat

In the eighteenth century the astronomer-king Jai Singh II raised observatories at Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi. The Varanasi observatory stands on this very ghat, its sundials and astronomical instruments still in place. The balconies with their latticed windows look out over the river and the city, recalling royal jharokhas. The observatory was restored in 1910-11. The ghat lies between Dashashwamedh and Tripura Bhairavi.

अठारहवीं सदी में खगोलशास्त्री महाराजा जय सिंह द्वितीय ने जयपुर, दिल्ली, उज्जैन, मथुरा और वाराणसी में वेधशालाएं बनवाईं। काशी की वेधशाला इसी घाट के ऊपर स्थित है, जहां सूर्य-घड़ी और खगोलीय यंत्र आज भी खड़े हैं। घाट के बरामदों की जालीदार खिड़कियों से नदी और शहर का नज़ारा दिखता है। ये जालीदार कोठियां शाही झरोखों की याद दिलाती हैं। 1910-11 में वेधशाला का जीर्णोद्धार हुआ। यह घाट दशाश्वमेध और त्रिपुरा भैरवी के बीच बसा है।
