History & Significance of Manikarnika Ghat

Legend says the Manikarnika Kund was dug by the chakra of Vishnu, and that Parvati’s earring (karn-kundal) fell here — hence the name. The kund filled with the sweat of Vishnu, and Shiva called its water the water of moksha. The Agni Dhuni, the fire of the cremation ground, has burned for centuries without cease. Thousands of bodies are cremated here every day. The sandalwood bearers and the Dom families conduct the rites. The kund beside the flames and its quiet edge give this crowded place a character all its own.

कथा है कि भगवान विष्णु के चक्र से खोदा गया मणिकर्णिका कुंड यहीं है, और पार्वती की बाली (कर्ण-कुंडल) इसी स्थान पर गिरी थी — इसीलिए नाम मणिकर्णिका पड़ा। विष्णु के पसीने से कुंड में जल भरा, जिसे शिव ने मोक्ष का जल कहा। यहां के अग्नि-धुनी (श्मशान की अग्नि) को सदियों से कभी न बुझने वाली माना जाता है। हर दिन हजारों शव यहां जलाए जाते हैं। पास में ही काशी के प्रसिद्ध चंदन वाले और डोम परिवारों का काम चलता है। मणिकर्णिका कुंड के दर्शन और इसके किनारे की शांति इस भीड़-भरे स्थान को अलग ही बनाते हैं।
