History & Significance of Scindia Ghat

At the start of the nineteenth century Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior built this ghat. As a Shiva temple was being raised on the bank, the sandy ground gave way and the shrine tilted towards the river — and it still leans there today, one of the most photographed sights of Varanasi. The Scindia palace stands above. The ghat lies north of Manikarnika, so cremation and bathing continue side by side. Old accounts say the Maratha-Bengal trade routes met here.

उन्नीसवीं सदी के आरंभ में ग्वालियर के महाराजा दौलत राव सिंधिया ने यह घाट बनवाया। निर्माण के दौरान किनारे पर बन रहा एक शिव मंदिर रेत के धंसने से झुककर नदी की ओर मुड़ गया और आज भी उसी झुकाव में खड़ा है — यह वाराणसी के सबसे अधिक खींचे जाने वाले दृश्यों में से एक है। घाट के ऊपर सिंधिया राजपरिवार का महल है। यह घाट मणिकर्णिका के उत्तर में बसा है, इसलिए यहां अंत्येष्टि के साथ स्नान भी चलता है। कहते हैं कि यहीं से मराठा-बंगाल व्यापार मार्ग जुड़ते थे।
