History & Significance of Panchganga Ghat

English
Panchganga means the "five rivers" — Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Kirana and Dhutpapa are believed to meet here invisibly, which makes it one of the holiest bathing spots. The famous Vindu Madhava (Krishna) temple once stood above the ghat; under Aurangzeb it was pulled down and the Alamgir Mosque raised on the site in 1693. The stairs are among the highest and deepest of Kashi. The Juna Akhara beside it is a great centre of the renunciant orders. The river view from here is one of the widest in the city.
